Mock Portfolio Outcomes:

  • Tracking will be done weekly until April 1st

  • Goal is to outperform the S&P 500

  • 6 commodity based equities and 5 pure commodities

  • Commodity Strategy - Pick commodities with current relevance (seasonal, and consumer demand) for best short term performance.

  • Equity Strategy

    • Pick medium to high risk companies backed by stronger commodities such as gold

    • Pick lower risk companies backed by more volatile commodities such as agricultural products

    • Incorporate wide array of commodity items for increased chances at sizable short term growth

Equity Basis:

  • $300,000 allocated to commodity based company equity traded on U.S. Exchanges.

  • Equity decisions meant to be risky featuring a variety of equities representing different commodity industries including agriculture, energy, and metals.

Commodity Basis:

  • $200,000 allocated to commodity continuous contracts (tracked via https://tradingeconomics.com/commodities)

  • Sugar, Lumber, Gold, Polyethylene, and Natural Gas

  • Commodity Relevance/Timeliness:

    • Sugar: Sugar was picked for the portfolio to act as a vehicle for a large volume of shares, purchased at a price of just ¢19.90, allowing for over 100,000 shares to be purchased. While unlikely this investment will provide an opportunity for major growth if, hypothetically, the price of sugar skyrockets. On another note, within the United States, food products have become increasingly packed with sugar, and many Americans have become “addicted” to sugar. While alternative sweetener options have become much more popular in recent years, because we are only tracking this portfolio over a short period of time, alternative sugar demand shouldn’t crowd out that of traditional sugar indicating that the value of sugar commodities will increase and if not they will remain stable not deducting from the portfolios value.

    • Lumber: Currently there is a housing shortage in the United States, if the problem is addressed in the foreseeable future, the demand for lumber will likely rise as it is a critical material in home development. Also lumber harvesting has and is becoming increasingly more sustainable with growing development in areas such as better forest management and reforestation aiding both the global lumber demand and environmental concerns.

    • Gold: Gold is likely the safest and most popular commodity investment on the market as it serves as a store of value, maintaining purchasing power over time. In our portfolio gold acts as both a familiar face contributing to the legitimacy of the wide mix of financial instruments, as well as foundational investment which is less volatile and higher in value relative to many other commodities.

    • Polyethylene: Polyethylene is the world's most widely used plastic, used in many items including bottles, bags, and packaging. Polyethylene can be produced in large quantities relatively inexpensively as compared to other plastics and is expected to grow over $50 billion in market size over the next seven years. While talk of limiting single use plastics have become more common around the globe, the short term nature of this financial experiment shouldn’t have any conflict with the long term plastic reduction goals within many nations. Plastic will continue to be an essential commercial material over the duration of this portfolio examination.

    • Natural Gas: Natural Gas demand should be higher than average over the period of examination (February 21 - April 1) as much of the United States experiences cool temperatures further increasing the demand for residential and commercial space heating.
